I really didn't know how to begin this task. There are connections between everything and it is very interesting delving deep and figuring out what they are and it actually making sense that they are useful and connected! However everything is a mess in my head, as ever, and Im not really sure how to organise all these things even-though they are there!
The easiest way I found to get everything down was to explode my head through colour coded lists:
Dancing
Music
Illustration
Connections
I then realised that there were links in the processes of learning and creating and found it easiest to figure these out by turning them into flow diagrams so I could see the links.
These are a lists of the different music and dancing experience I have had through my 18 years:
The Pythagoreans were probably the first westerners at it when they declared: "The eyes are made for astronomy, the ears for harmony, and these are sister sciences." Poems and paintings became music, and music became paintings and poems. Wassily Kandinsky
DANCE
These are examples of the tap dances that I have choreographed. I thought that these were important to document because you have to turn movements into words and try and remember formations or variations to basic steps through lines. These are all the preliminary stages that are necessary of creating a final outcome.
I am on the combining my music and my dancing together. In this bluegrass band I am in I discovered that tap dancing originated from "clogging" and therefore it would be perfect more me to do in the breakdowns. This has meant drawing on the tap dancing which I already know, doing research on clogging dancing and then constructing my own dance inspired by what I know. This is going to take a while to develop but this is a video of a little practice.
Music
I am hoping to turn this into a promotional poster for the bluegrass band. I felt that these are summative illustrations of the visual language module this year.
Having access to recording studios and music room practice rooms has allowed me to create random pieces of art whilst in rehearsal, for example a tape recorder from a microphone lead. This is another band I am in at uni, here we are writing our own songs and it is a very different style of music, more pop rock. This is interesting because this uses a different creative side, almost creating poetry to portray something, creating images through words rather than illustrations.
I was in a band like this before university and I made some promotional posters associated with band. These posters were distributed in different colours around 6th form. This is showing how illustration can be functional in helping my music get out there
This is an illustration I did in 6th form as well. Its not the best piece of work I have ever produced but it was inspired by a photograph of my band performing an acoustic set.
I also linked song writing, performing/recording of the song and art into my final A-level piece, aiming to communicate the sounds of the song through the formal elements.
Furthermore I have explored the analogue methods of music making and listening visually as it is something that really interests me.
These are things from inside my bedroom that are important to me and I could use these to add a personal level as an experiment.Print making is something which I really enjoy and I could combine music and print making together :)
Also created a fan poster of the Doors my all time favourite band. I could draw on my knowledge of every single lyric to conjour up illustrations of each song.
Then my project on Delia Derbyshire. I have been able to explore visually portraying music and her legacy. This includes the equiptment used to create music through different media.
Also I could visually represent the shapes of the frequencies that came out of the oscillator that was used in the creation of her work and then apply this. Also I could create images out of music, out of someones music on a cassette tape. This kills me a little bit because they were bands from people who recorded one EP and were a little up coming band, this kind of thing would be a huge milestone for me and my band and I destroyed it :(
